The world of the harp and its string setups is a forgotten world that is rarely talked about or not at all.
Yet we are faced with the oldest instrument of humanity (and also one of the most complex): its luck is that it is a ‘self-compensating’ instrument (we will see what it means later)
A topic like this is rather complicated but it certainly deserves to be investigated without expecting to understand and explain everything.
We will have a chat about the so-called ‘historical’ harps, from music lovers of the Middle Ages up to the early decades of the nineteenth century (but what I will try to explain is basically fine also in the case of modern harps)
The topics covered are the following (but I could modify it depending on the questions I will receive):
– Check the FL product of your Arpa
– Method for determining the choice of the tension value and how to distribute it between the strings of the harp
– Method to rebalance the tensions of the strings of your harp
– The issue of standard pitches in relation to the FL product and how to deal with the problem
– Empirical method to calculate the setting of one’s harp from scratch and related risks
– The types of harp string between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries: what we know
-Coated strings for empire harp: mechanical and acoustic characteristics compared to modern ones with nylon bow core
– Synthetic strings: limits and advantages
